Most Thai entrepreneurs who want to enter the UK think of one city: London. It is the obvious answer — and for many businesses, the expensive one. Here is why we recommend starting in Manchester instead.

1. Costs are 30–40% lower

Office space, staff, accommodation and daily operating costs in Manchester run significantly below London. For a business testing a new market, that difference is not a luxury — it is runway. The same budget buys you far more months to learn what actually works.

2. An SME network you can actually reach

London's business community is enormous, and access to decision-makers usually runs through several layers. Manchester operates at a human scale: owners and founders are reachable, and a warm introduction still carries real weight.

3. Every major industry is represented

Manufacturing, food and beverage, retail, technology, media, healthcare, professional services — the North West covers the full spread. Whatever sector you are in, there is a counterpart here to talk to.

4. A gateway to the whole UK

Manchester sits centrally. Around 60% of the UK population is within roughly four hours' travel, and Manchester Airport connects directly to major international routes. You can base yourself here and still cover the country.

5. There is no "posh wall"

Certain London business circles still run on background — which school, which network, which introduction. Manchester is markedly more direct: if your product is good and your proposition is clear, people will take the meeting. For a Thai business without a British pedigree, that difference matters more than most people expect.

6. When Manchester grows, you grow with it

The UK government's Northern Powerhouse programme continues to direct infrastructure and economic investment into the region — transport links, business districts and media investment among them. Entering a city on an upward curve is very different from entering a saturated one.

When should you move to London?

London is the right answer when your business genuinely needs it: financial services, luxury brands targeting international buyers, or a business that already has UK traction and needs a flagship presence. Our view is simply about sequence — establish first, then scale into London, rather than paying London prices to learn your first lessons.

How we usually advise: use Manchester as the base for market testing and relationship building for the first 12–18 months. Once you have real customers and a working model, expanding into London becomes a decision backed by evidence rather than assumption.

In summary

Manchester is not the "cheap alternative" to London. It is a serious commercial centre with lower barriers to entry, more accessible decision-makers, and a public investment programme behind it. For a Thai business entering the UK for the first time, that combination is hard to beat.
